Sheptytsky and the Ukrainian movement in Austria-Hungary
The Metropolitan tried to gain support for his faithful through the improvement of the church administration and the activation of the clergy's pastoral activity.
Most significantly, the cultural and educational projects of the Metropolitan gained widely. Sheptytsky, as a member of the Galician Seim and Austrian Parliament, supported many political initiatives of the Ukrainian community. Thus, on June 28, 1910, the Metropolitan delivered a speech in the Higher Chamber of the Austrian Parliament about the need to establish a Ukrainian university.
However, the Metropolitan did not hesitate to condemn the actions that he considered non-Christian, immoral, such as the murder of the governor of Galicia, Count A. Pototsky committed by the Ukrainian student M. Sichynsky.
In January 1914 Metropolitan Sheptytsky actually introduced Ukrainian-Polish agreement regarding electoral reform.
