Creation of a Ukrainian Higher Educational Institution
The Metropolitan paid serious attention to issues of higher education.
Ukrainian University became his dream, and he was engaged in its realization during his life.
One can say that it was the question of the university that unified him with Ukrainians for the first time. Thus, in 1901, during the mass protests of Ukrainian students, he allowed theological students to take part in protest actions and supported the agenda for Ukrainian politicians to achieve the opening of a Ukrainian university. His most important speech in the upper house of the Austrian Parliament was devoted to this exact question (June 1910). After 1923, Ukrainian students had little chance of gaining a higher education in Poland.
The Metropolitan supported the functioning of a secret Ukrainian university in 1920-1925. In 1928, at the Metropolitan’s initiative the Theological Academy was opened, which was supposed to be the foundation and the cornerstone of a future Ukrainian Catholic University.
